Features for a Shed Workshop
By SchwebAdmin
Sheds are great structures for storing outdoor equipment, but they can have versatile uses. One of the best ways to use a shed or detached garage is to turn it into a workshop. To convert the shed into a workshop, you’ll need a few features to make it more functional. Luckily, Raber Storage Barns offers many options for our sheds and garages that you can add to make the workshop fit your needs. Below are some features to consider having in your shed workshop so you can have a focused workspace.
Electrical Packages
Electricity is necessary in a shed workshop, especially for the power tools you’ll be using. Adding power to your workshop will make it more functional, including powering tools, adding lights, and adding internet if you need it. You’ll also be able to install heating and cooling systems for more climate control. Before installing, check with your local building department to see if you need any permits for electrical work. This work needs to be done by a professional, which is why we have a few electrical packages so we can help you find a licensed electrician to install it for you.

Our Standard Electrical Package includes:
- One 6-pole 100-amp breaker box
- Up to 14 interior outlets
- 2 light switches
- 4 lights
Our Premium Electrical Package includes:
- One 20-pole 200-amp breaker box
- Up to 16 interior outlets
- 4 light switches
- 10 lights
For both packages, you can also add additional interior lights for $25 per fixture and exterior lights for $50 per fixture.
Lighting
With the electrical package added to your shed, you’ll be able to add the lights you’ll need for your shed workshop. We recommend having some overhead lights and task lighting near your workspace so you can efficiently see what you’re doing. Adding windows to the shed will give some natural lighting during the say so you can save money on electrical bills. They’ll also provide airflow for some ventilation.
Insulation Package

Insulating your shed will regulate the temperature inside and make it more comfortable to work year-round. It makes the structure cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, so you can control air flow with the Midwest’s fluctuating temperatures. Adding it to the floor, ceiling, and walls will provide vapor and moisture barriers to protect the structure and extend its life.
Our team can add spray foam insulation to the shed. This insulation has low to high densities, so you can decide which will suit your needs and weather conditions best. There are two types of insulation we offer: open cell and closed cell. Open cell is more affordable, but requires dense layering. A closed cell is more effective and protects the shed from wear and tear.
Workbenches
A workbench gives you a designated workspace to make you more efficient while working on your passion projects. We offer workbenches that are 3 feet wide and range from 2 feet long to as long as the shed wall. Workbenches become the focal point of the shed workshop, so you need to ensure you have lights and outlets installed nearby so you can work.

Tool Storage
Keep everything organized in your shed with tool storage. Pegboards are great to have above your workbench to store handheld tools, and are easy to install. You could even hang baskets on them for hardware or seeds if using it for gardening. Our team can install a shelf in the shed for additional storage, which is great for any supplies. Having tool storage keeps your belongings within reach and keeps the shed clutter-free, as things spread around the floor can be a hazard while working.
Lofts
A loft creates extra overhead space for you to store items you don’t need as frequently. If you need the shed for a little bit of storage, a loft is a great place to store things out of the way. They’re especially beneficial if you’re a woodworker and you have raw lumber lying around. You can put them in the loft so they’re not crowding the floor. Our Lofted Gambrel Barns and Lofted Garden Sheds are the perfect choice if you need overhead storage.
