Organization Tips for a Backyard Greenhouse
By SchwebAdmin
Now that spring is here, many Midwestern homeowners are looking to start their gardens. The best way to have control over your garden’s environment is with a pre-built greenhouse from Raber Storage Barns. These greenhouses are a great place to start seedlings and grow plants while keeping all your gardening supplies organized. To keep organization easy, we’ve detailed some helpful tips on effectively arranging your backyard greenhouse.
Keep Similar Plants Together

Arrange your plants carefully in your greenhouse, and keep like plants together. Our structures have wire shelves in the greenhouse area to help organize the plants and have proper airflow and drainage. Plants that require more sunlight should be on the higher shelves, placed where the greenhouse gets the most sun. Plants that need less light and more humidity should be on a bottom shelf. A great way to organize your greenhouse plants is to organize them by edible and inedible plants, as they require different food and water intake. You can also organize by the date they were seeded to better monitor them. Make sure all plants are properly labeled with plant tags so you can remember what plants are where.
Utilize Vertical Storage
Our greenhouses come with a small storage area to keep your gardening supplies organized. We recommend utilizing vertical storage in this space, and shelves and hooks are the simplest ways to do this. By using up the greenhouses’ wall space, you’ll be able to keep things off the floor to clear needed walking space. Install shelving for pots you’re not currently using, watering cans, gloves, storage bins, and more. Use racks or hooks to hang tools, baskets, hoses, and other frequently used items so they’re readily available when you need them.
Storage Bins
Plastic storage bins are stackable, which can save space in your backyard greenhouse. If you add shelving to the greenhouse’s storage space, you’ll be able to keep these bins off the floor. Storage bins are great for organizing your soil, fertilizer, and tools you don’t use as much. It will also protect your soil and fertilizer from pests as they won’t be able to chew through the plastic. For gloves, small tools, and seed packets, find smaller bins that you can easily label and organize on a shelf.
Create Zones
The way our greenhouses are built allows you to create distinct zones for different areas of gardening to use the space efficiently. Have one space be for potting and planting, one for storage, and one for growing the plants. The greenhouses’ storage area is where you’ll keep your extra pots, buckets, thermometers, soil, etc., organized.
Greenhouse Zone

The zone for growing the plants will be in the greenhouse section. This zone is made from highly durable polycarbonate panels that can endure extreme weather, insulate the greenhouse, and diffuse light so your plants get the optimal amount of sunlight to grow. Polycarbonate is one of the most durable greenhouse materials on the market.
Potting Bench
You could also add a potting bench in the storage space for a dedicated work area where you’ll be able to garden in any Midwestern weather. Our greenhouses are fully customizable, so you can add in features to make creating zones easier, like a workbench for a potting area. A potting bench keeps all your everyday gear and frequently used gardening tools in an easily accessible place. It keeps your tools close and ready to use while you’re potting and planting. When using one, though, we recommend keeping the surface free of clutter by storing your tools near or on a shelf underneath it so you don’t get overwhelmed when working.
Clean Consistently
Ensuring your backyard greenhouse is clean will deter pests from entering and prevent your plants from becoming diseased. Make sure you remove clutter regularly to get rid of broken or unused items and organize better. Your greenhouse will get dirty with all the soil and fertilizer you use. Sweep it regularly to prevent you from slipping. Wipe down surfaces as well, especially your potting bench, to keep bugs from getting in. We recommend cleaning as you are working to keep it manageable, and taking out compost and general trash regularly to stay clean.
