Features Needed For a Horse Barn

By SchwebAdmin

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to start preparing your horse barns for the new pastures. Whether you’re an equestrian expert with multiple horse barns or you’re just starting out and need to build a new horse barn, Raber Storage Barns has all you need. There are a few features you’ll need for a high-quality horse barn to keep your horses happy and healthy, including tack rooms, feeding rooms, wash stalls, and more. Below are some key features you need to consider having in your new horse barn.

Functional Features

Tack Room

The tack room is one of the most essential features needed for a horse barn. This is the room where you’ll store saddles, bridles, brushes, blankets, and the like for your horses. It keeps equipment and grooming supplies safe, organized, and easily accessible when you need them for riding and daily care. This room should be dry, clean, and climate-controlled to properly maintain equipment, especially leather ones.  To keep the room organized, have saddle racks, bridle hooks, and cabinets and shelves for grooming supplies.

Raber Storage Barns has a new horse barn style, the Heritage Horse Barn! This barn is similar to our Monitor Horse Barns, just without the second-story loft. The Heritage Barn comes standard with a tack room so you can have a dry, secure place for equipment that is organized to make daily tasks easier. To make the structure climate-controlled for leather equipment, we have an insulation package to regulate temperature.

Feed Room

A feed room is where you’ll store all your feed, grain, and hay for the horses, and where you’ll prepare their feed. Our team can add horse feeders to each stall for the horses to eat, but you should store the feed and prepare it in a separate room that the horses can’t get into, so they don’t overeat. This space should be dry and well-ventilated, as wet or moldy hay and feed can spoil and be very dangerous for your horse’s health. The feed should be stored in metal containers so that pests don’t get into them. Our Monitor Horse Barns have a second-story loft, which is a great place to store your extra feed and hay.

Utilities

Electricity

Electricity is crucial in any farm building for effective barn management. It allows your farmhands to see what they’re doing while working at night and will power any fans you have running for ventilation. A licensed electrician should install all electrical wiring to ensure it is done safely. We have a horse barn electrical package available, which includes a 6-pole 100-amp breaker box, 14 interior outlets, 2 light switches, and 4 overhead lights. It also includes steel boxes and steel-coated wire so the horses can’t chew on them.

Lights

Adding lighting with our electrical package will make the horses more comfortable, especially during the winter and when you’re completing tasks at night. Horses perform better in well-lit environments. The best way to add light to the horse barn is by using natural light as much as possible. Use windows, skylights, and Dutch doors to add natural light, which is good for the horses’ circadian rhythms and will save you money on energy bills.

Safety Features

Ventilation

Ventilation is vital for your horse’s respiratory health. They need clear air consistently to avoid getting infections. Poor ventilation traps dust, moisture, and ammonia inside the barn, which are harmful to your horse’s lungs. Installing ventilation like ridge vents, eaves, gable vents, cupolas, and windows will manage moisture and ammonia levels to ensure the air inside the barn is safe. You could also add exhaust fans to continuously keep air moving. Ventilation will also control the condensation inside the barn, which is beneficial for your tack and feed rooms.

Wash Stall

You should have a designated stall in your horse barn that’s a wash stall for grooming your horses. A wash stall streamlines grooming and bathing for your horses, which is necessary for good hygiene and health. It’s also beneficial for hosing them down to cool them off after long, hot days.  It makes these tasks easier than doing them outdoors, especially during harsh weather. These stalls should not be near your tack or feed rooms, as water is involved and can damage your equipment and feed. They should also be equipped with good drainage so moisture doesn’t build up on the structure.
